TO HONOR OUR FLAG

For many, many years, veterans from VFW Post 10544 placed American Flags on both sides of Wallace Street and along Washington Street for national holidays. Those holidays include:  Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, and Flag Day. Because of age and infirmity, these good men were no longer able to continue that tradition.

In 2008 citizen volunteers made sure that American flags were placed in our community.  We sincerely thank the following families and organizations for their efforts to place American Flags on community streets:

Darren Giese Family & Boy Scouts

Matt Rooyakkers Family

John Kempen Family

Combined Locks Advancement Association

Roxie Strick & Friends

We are in need of groups, clubs, organizations, and families that would be willing to volunteer time to keep this tradition alive in the community in 2009.  This would entail getting up early in the morning on designated holidays to place flags at curbside in pre-drilled holes; then picking the flags up for storage at the end of the day.

If you or your group is interested, please call Village Administrator Mark Van Thiel at tel. 788-7740.

LEAF LOADER COMETH

In the not-too-distant future we will see the return of leaf collection activities in our community. The Village of Combined Locks does collect leaves at curbside in the fall of the year. Leaf loading activities typically begin about the second or third week of October.  Residents are asked to rake leaves into the gutter line.  Please make sure that leaf piles are kept low so that children cannot be hidden from motorists’ view and kept close to the curb so as not to interfere with traffic.  No other debris (sticks, branches, yard waste) should be placed at the curb for collection.  Leaf loading operations will end about the second or third week of November.  Where did summer go?

TREES & BRUSH

The Village of Combined Locks provides curbside brush collection service during the months of April thru the first Wednesday of November and also provides collection of Christmas trees immediately following the holiday season.

Curbside brush is collected on the first and third Wednesdays from August through the first Wednesday in November.

Large brush materials must be piled in a manner so that all cut ends are facing in one direction along the length of the terrace area.

Curbside brush collection service does not include the following:

a.    Collecting materials that have been cleared or removed from vacant land.

b.    Collecting materials that have been cut by a commercial tree service.

c.     Bushes, shrubs, vines or hedge/tree clippings.

Call 911 when you need help

Some citizens have been hesitant to call 911 for various reasons. The Combined Locks Fire Department would like you to know a few things:

·        You will not be charged for calling 911 to dispatch the Fire Department

·        There is no call too small or too big. When in doubt call 911

·        Don’t be bothered if we respond to your call with lights and sirens. It is not for the purpose of drawing attention to you or the Fire Department. It is required as we need to respond in a safe and timely manner.

Smoke Detectors and Carbon Monoxide Detectors

As the heating season nears, remember to replace batteries in smoke

detectors and carbon monoxide detectors. It is recommended that smoke

alarms and carbon monoxide detectors are replaced every 7-10 years.
