In 1962 President John F. Kennedy designated May 15th as National Peace Officers Memorial Day, and the calendar week in which May 15th falls as National Police Week. In 1994 President Bill Clinton signed public law 103-322 requiring that the American flag be lowered to half staff on all government buildings on May 15th.

Congressman Biaggi is the most decorated police officer in the United States. Congressman Biaggi was shot 10 times and stabbed four times in the line of duty.
